Taupo is the adventure capital and gateway to the Central Plateau … and home to The Property Store. We all live here for various reasons but where should you live? Have you found your ideal house for rent in Taupo yet?

Where to live in Taupo?

Taupo township is located at the northern end of our Great Lake Taupo – Taupo Nui a Tia. At the southern end is Turangi (35 min from Taupo) and Tokaanu (40 min). In between you’ll find Waitahanui (5 – 10 min), Hatepe, Motutere, Waitetoko, Turangi-ita (25 min) and Motuoapa when heading south. To the west of Turangi is Tokaanu and along the south-western side of the lake are the holiday villages of Pukawa, Omori and Kuratau.

Taupo’s newer subdivisions are located at Wharewaka Point, close to the airport, and in Brentwood which is between Nukuhau and Acacia Bay.

Well-established suburbs include Wharewaka, Rainbow Point, Richmond Heights and Two Mile Bay at the southern end of town. Hilltop and Bird Area are central. Tauhara has a mix of lower and mid-priced family homes and is positioned close to the industrial and sporting areas to the west of town.

Across the Waikato River (known locally as the Control Gates Bridge) are Nukuhau, Brentwood and Acacia Bay heading in the east direction, and to the north are Rangitira Park and Huka Village areas. There is a mix of both new and established housing throughout these suburbs.

Outlying areas where you will find rural living opportunities are Pohipi, Mapara and Palmer Mill Roads, all to the west and north-west of Taupo township.

Taupo Housing Dynamics

Taupo’s housing is made up of 1/3 owner-occupied, 1/3 holiday homes and 1/3 houses for rent. With approximately 7,000 rental properties this means there is a good range of houses for rent available spread throughout all areas and school zones.

Taupo’s Surrounds

Outside of Taupo township there are a number of smaller settlements.

  • To the north-west heading towards Rotorua are the dairy farming communities of Reporoa and Broadlands. This way lifestyle blocks are available to rent on both Whites and River Roads from time to time.
  • 10 minutes north of Taupo lies the village of Wairakei where you will find older solid weatherboard homes on ¼-acre sections – just like the good old days.
